Description

The power system simplified representation is achieved using the single machine infinite bus (SMIB) systems. The main study objective is ascertaining the ability of the Grey Wolf Optimisation (GWO) algorithm in how well the performance of the Proportional Integral Derivative controller is enhanced for Single Machine Infinite Bus system. The GWO algorithm is an evolution based metaheuristic optimisation algorithm which copies behavior of grey wolves intelligently in searching for food in their surroundings. The dynamical model of the SMIB was adapted from the works of Ahmed et al., (2026) and the GWO algorithm tuned PID was referred to as PDGWO. Comparisons was made considering the system without controller using unity feedback (NUFB) and the normal Proportional Integral Derivative controller (NPID). All was carried out with the aid of the SIMULINK/MATLAB simulation software. Results indicated that convergence was attained at around the 5th iteration with an error of around 0.5700. The system had oscillations with the NUFB producing overshoot of around 90% and around 50s settling time. The system with the NPID had an overshoot of about 15% and about 2s settling time. And with the PDGWO the overshoot was almost 0% with a setting time of around 1s. The system without the controller may not be feasible and utilising the NPID and PDGWO may likely be stable because the amount of error converges to zero with time. It revealed that the system with the PDGWO was the best having the lowest values of both the overshoot and settling time. Making it more accurate and faster. It was able to successfully remove oscillations and overshoot with better settling time. Hence, the PDGWO was the best, followed by with the NPID and finally the NUFB in terms of system performance. It is expected that further enhancement could be realized with further research.
