Description
The Study was on application of Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithm (PSOa) for tuning of a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control buck converter system. So many modern crucial devices power systems are sandwiched control systems for their effective operations. The popular and simple control methods remain the viable options because others are more complicated making implementation highly difficult. Though the PID method was popular but implementation require designated steps which might not work directly well with so many systems due to their complications. The metaheuristic approaches apart from their advantages can also serve as bridges to those issues. The work is simulation based using with the popular MATLAB/SIMULINK software. It is an optimization problem, focused on minimizing the error resulted between the desired buck supply voltage (reference) and its actual voltage output (response) subject to the careful selection/tuning the gains of the controller. The presented scheme (OPD), without controller (NULL) and with and the PID controller were cross-examined. According to results; without any control or with unity feedback the objective of getting an output voltage of 5V cannot be attained, as the system settled at 60V. Considering the system with the PID scheme, the system settled at 5V with a settling time of about of 5 s. the system with OPD yielded a settling time of 0.05s. The optimal were reached around the third (3) iteration with an error of around 0.0064 V. The system was made 100 faster with the proposed scheme and is fast enough to ensure steady supply in the event of stabilization switching or been hit disturbance effects. Hence, it can be concluded that the PSO had been successfully applied in the optimal PID control of buck power supply. It stabilised the system with improved performance. Also expected, is that with in-depth search better results are expected.
