Spiking Neural Networks: Bringing the Brain’s Timing into Artificial Intelligence

by Dr Parijata Majumdar (Tripura University)

Description

Artificial intelligence has made great strides with deep learning, but traditional neural networks overlook one of the brain’s most powerful tools—time. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) introduce timing and event-driven computation, mimicking the way biological neurons fire only when needed. This talk will explore how SNNs differ from conventional AI models, why they promise greater energy efficiency and biological realism, and how they can unlock new possibilities in neuromorphic hardware, robotics, and real-time learning systems. The challenges in training spiking models and what breakthroughs are needed to bring them into mainstream AI will also be explored in detail.
